It all started a long time ago. One thing I do remember, when I was very young I drew cartoon characters on wooden blocks that I had found somewhere. Then later I was permitted to draw these cartoons on the stairwell leading to my room. And of course, like all kids do, you make all sorts of wonderful Artsy stuff for Mom and Dad or anyone who would accept them! The watercolor part comes into the picture much later. In about l970, I was pushed into a Watercolor class because an Acrylic class had been canceled. It was very hard, but by the time the class was over, the light had clicked on! I had found the rhythm of that "watercolor thing". There are not many days since then that I haven't picked up my brush and did something creative with watercolor on paper. |
Touch the viewer in some way, with feelings of happiness, nostalgia, intrigue, curiosity....with subject matter and/or color and composition. Take the eye on an adventure that lets the mind free to soar into the unknown or to find a familiar path to linger on for a time. If I can accomplish this I feel I have succeeded in a painting. I go on adventures myself at times. Breaking out of my traditional painting barriers. Going on a wild ride of color and shapes. Coming up with a whole new way to say something. |
We live and work in the Elkhorn Range of the Blue Mountains of Northeastern Oregon. Our home and studio is on a long mile of dirt off the paved road. We make our own power with solar cells and batteries. Our water is gravity fed spring 3/4 mile away. This life style is not for everyone, we have been here for years so things are pretty finely tuned, well sometimes. The deer, elk, coyotes, and birds of all kinds, are an important part of our lives. The birds that appear on the clothesline prints and paintings are based on the clothesline out my studio window. The birds and animals are my touchstone to reality. They keep me grounded as I move among totally new and different painting techniques and adventures. |
